Dig It...
“The so called “Beat Generation” was a whole bunch of people all of different nationalities, who came to the conclusion that society sucked”
- Amiri Baraka
The language is dirty. The music is thumping. The room is smoking. This is the beat. The beatnik generation of the 1950s breathed a new life into American literature, music and art. The movement was an act of passive resistance to what many saw as capitalist absurdity. It was a time of poetry and jazz music, alcoholism and experimentation, travel and intellectual debate. The beatnik movement inspired a new generation of free thinkers. This play was created to tell their story.
The play will consist of poems, comedy acts and live jazz music, all incorporated into an original script. We will be re-creating the ambience of 1950's New York. Candles will adorn the tables, live instruments on stage and a bar serving cocktails from the times. This will truly be an interactive and creative endeavor. This is an original play, transcribed from the writings of the beatniks.
